21 Days of Thanksgiving Day 7: The Best Medicine

Scroll down to content

Since November is ( for those who live in the U.S.) the month of Thanksgiving, I want to take the next three weeks to make daily posts about things I am grateful for. There was an old hymn I heard growing up called “Count your blessings”. So since I believe gratitude begets blessings, (and we could use a little more of that,) Come with me as we go on this journey of thankfulness.

The best gifts are ones where you can bless others and bless yourself as well. To me, humor is like that. I’ll be the first to admit that given the subjective, relative nature of humor I probably bless myself much more often than I bless others, but that’s alright. Humor has been a real source of healing for me. It also is a leavening agent that helps keep things in balance. If I ever get to the place where I can’t find something about myself to laugh at I will be in big trouble. Life is far too serious to take seriously.

Humor always requires us to see things from a different perspective. It challenges our convictions and many times points out the absurd we originally held as sacred. It can make a person start thinking without even knowing it. Humor also deflates pomposity, salves fear and unifies even the most diverse people. Humor is one of the things that makes life wonderful. Thank you to all the people in my life that have made me laugh and smile. You have saved me in ways you’ll never know.
