Like many of you, I am keeping the people of Italy (and the world) in my thoughts and prayers. Here’s a post from last Spring remembering a simpler time for myself and the people of Sicily.

Faces of Sicily: View of Trapani from Erice. Trapani is an important fishing port of western Sicily. It was founded by the Elymians, one of Sicily’s indigenous civilizations, and also served as the port city for Erice.
Clock Tower, Taormina. This structure was built in the twelfth century; destroyed by the French in 1676; and renovated in 1679. At that time, the clock was installed.

Faces of Sicily: Another ancient Doric masterpiece in Segesta: the home of Elymians, one of three indigenous people of the island.

 

Faces of Sicily. Temple of the Concordia in Agrigento. This Doric masterpiece was constructed around 440 – 430 BC.

 

Faces of Sicily: San Giovanni degli Ermite. Groundbreaking occurred in the 6th Century and the church was completed in 1132. This church served as a mosque when Islam was the principal religion of Sicily. It is now a monastery.
