Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania has a very interesting past. The city is located in the Pocono mountains and has been called ” The Switzerland of America” due to its mountain scenery.  Although the city is named Jim Thorpe it really has no ties whatsoever to the native american sports legend. The original name of the city was Mauch Chuck which is a native american word from the Delaware tribe which means “The place of Bears”. When Jim Thorpe died in 1953 his wife was angry that the his home state of Oklahoma would not erect a monument in his memory and made a deal to have his body moved to this Mauch Chuck if the city would rename itself Jim Thorpe. His grave mound does sit on soil moved from Oklahoma as well as soil from Stockholm Sweden where Thorpe had won several Olympic Medals.
